Ministers
repeatedly warned court interpreters’ contract failing and trials would
collapse as a result – Andy Slaughter
Andy Slaughter MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister,
commenting on today’s damning Justice Select Committee Report into the Ministry
of Justice’s interpreting and translation services, said:
"Conservative
Ministers have been repeatedly warned by Labour and others that this contract
was failing and that trials would collapse as a result. So far, they've been in
total denial about the extent of the failure, but this report shows that their
shocking incompetence has led to miscarriages of justice in our courts.
“Claims
that the Ministry of Justice has failed to fully co-operate with the inquiry
are very serious, throwing into doubt ministerial statements on the success of
the contract. We therefore don’t know whether this contract really has
delivered anywhere near the savings claimed by Ministers. Given the level of
failures, this Tory-led Government should take their first right decision on court
interpreters and abandon the contract with ALS/Capita immediately."
